Fitting Replacement NEwel Posts to 1970s staircase

Hi All,

I'm hoping to upgrade my staircase which is currently a classic 1970s design with newels which are outside the stringer.

I know roughly what I need to do to replace the one at the bottom, but the top one I'm not so sure. Does anyone have any experience? Photos below:
