Hi guys

I am looking to install TRV's and new LSV's to my heating system. I have read that before installing it would be best to drain down the system to remove any deposits in the water. Is this correct? Also, i live in a top floor flat, how would i drain down the system? There isn't a drain valve anywhere.

Thanks

Craig

Yes, you'll need to drain the system to do this, apart from removing deposits in the water it'll stop you getting wet. You could take the opportunity to add some system cleaner a week before you do the job, then drain and flush it out.

If you really don't have any drain points then you'll probably have to drain a radiator into a bucket, then connect a rad valve to a hosepipe and drain it that way. This won't drain absolutely everything though. Failing that get one of those self-cutting washing machine taps and cut that onto a rad tail, then connect your hose to that. It'll drain a bit more out but you'll then have to decide whether you want to leave it in place or remove it and repair the pipe.

As you live in a top floor flat you'll have to find a way of draining to outside either down the stairwell or out a lower window, you may well need a long hosepipe either way, and if draining out a window make sure it's not above anywhere people may walk.

If anyone trips on the hose running down the stairs your gonna be liable, have you got public liability insurance ?

By asking the above question, I would advise to get someone in.

Move away from the spanner.
