I would like to fix these walls....and forever stay away from wallpaper...I have most of the layers of wallpaper off, and now what would be the next step. I am going to fix the cracks, try to sand down the imperfections....what to do next...I don't want to remove the plaster...its too messy...need a cleaner fix...not sheetrock....I was thinking paintable wallpaper...which would be a permanent fix...any other ideas out there?

Working on heritage buildings as I do this type of wall finish is common. I've only rarely seen it papered although it will without doubt work.
I've seen the more specialist type of paints used though, for example -
http://www.keimpaints.co.uk/
or
http://www.lime.org.uk/products/wall-paints/external-paints/mineral-paint-ty-mawr-range/[/QUOTE]

I looked at the website...do they have something to prevent new cracks from appearing? Not sure if the product is available in Canada though.
Thanks.

Keim is a German company I think so may be available over there I can't say for sure.
Preventing new cracks appearing is one of those things that can be a problem.
In the cases I have experience with generally the wall surface is repaired with a mixture based on mature lime putty and care is taken that it doesn't dry out too quickly. There are stabilizing solutions that I have seen put on although not actually being a plasterer I'm not sure of their makeup. It may be worth your while posting a question on the plastering forum if you wish to pursue this avenue.

I'll try that, thanks.
