What's the best way to fix 5.5mm ply to 18mm chipboard / caberboard in a bathroom for covering with vinyl sheet?

2cm screws, tacks/nails?

When you say vinyl sheet do you mean the hollow tongue and groove pvc planks or something else?
Is this floor or wall?

The rolled up lino stuff for the floor

Ahh, ok. Glue is favourite- no risk of projecting fixings showing through the vinyl. After that (and depending how thick your flooring is) staples or floor tacks, whichever you use make sure the heads are flush with the ply.

Screws are ok if it's thick good quality flooring. If it's thin cheap stuff eventually you'll see the screw head through the vinyl.
Glue wise yeah no more nails or that sort of thing, tbh PVA would do, gravity is your friend after all :)

I'll glue and screw a bit around the edges. I am more worried about tacks rising over time, at least a screw isn't going to wriggle out.
I'll be getting a decent thick vinyl sheet.

Contact adhesive - waterproof and doesn't require weighting down like PVA
