A (hopefully) simple inquiry, but I'd REALLY appreciate advice.

Took the front casing off my CH boiler just to give it a general clean. It hasn't been tended to in a while, and two of the lugs (?) that the self-tapping fixing screws screw into have broken.

I'm trying to buy replacements, but don't even know what they are called!

Made out of a piece of slightly springy steel, about 8x20mm, which is 'folded' in half, and then clips over the sheet edge which has the hole receiving the screw. Has a hole drilled in, and two protruberances which the screw 'bites' on. I can even send a photo!

Any advice as to what they're called and/or where to get them will earn my undying gratitude and respect.

They are a type of captive nut but are sometimes called 'U' clips or panel clips & used a lot in fitting car trim. Halfords or car accessory shop will have them.
(no need to go OTT on gratitude Ed :) )

i dunno, it might make up for some of the ungrateful baskets who visit this forum then fup off after they've got what they want. i feel violated. i'm taking a shower now.

Agree, there is a bit of that but just 'thanks' is ok. (money would be better though?)

I suspect what you're talking about is a 'Spire Nut' - hardened and tempered pressed steel gadget that slides over the edge of a panel or whatever, to secure 'self-tapping' screw (although actual 'self tapping' is not part of what actually happens with these nuts).

I've no idea why the name. No doubt someone will tell us.

Thanks for that guys and/or girls.
Spire nuts eh? Now I'm going to have to spend a couple of hours on google finding out why they're called that. Far too much free time...
