I'm going to be sticking some laminate flooring down in my room and the floorboards are cack, ideally I'd be using 6mm plywood to even it out but that works out blooming expensive would it be ok in this situation to use 6mm mdf instead?

From a cost point of view it could be better to use 4mm hardboard if the floor is'nt too uneven and if you are floating the floor, MDF is not suitable, ply would be best.. I don't know of any lamainate that is glued down, provided the laminate clicks together or glues together and not down onto the floor underneath it's a floating system and you should be ok with Hardboard. If you have a floor that does need sticking down, you must use ply for good results.
