Hi All

Please help me calculate the materials I need to lay flagstones in my relations drive. The area to cover is 10mx3.5m. Ground is solid and about 50mm hardcore was layed in winter. Ground was slushy and dirt was getting everywhere at the time. I have been to three local builders for material estimates. Two estimates are similar one is way out.

In the area to cover two have worked out I need 4Ton Hardcore 4 ton grit sand and 84 600x600x50 flagstones and 22 200x900 edges. The third was rushing like mad finishing work but worked out I need 47 flagstones. He left hardcore, sand and edges for me to calculate. Ridiculus and a lazy beast I thought. I think his calculation is wrong.

How do you calculate matrials for drives. Thanks in advance.

You have 35 m2 to cover, a flag is 600 x 600 and has an area of .36 m2 ..........?

Same with any material, 1m x 1m x 1m is 1m3, 6x6x.050.......?

Work it out and see for yourself who's right... (I made it 97 flags and 1.8m3 of type one and 1.8m3 sharp sand at 50mm)

Hi"The brickie" Thanks for your response. My calculations were doing my head in. After 4 hours of calculations mostly wrong I got a figure of 102 flags but I think your calculation is accurate. I will allow 5 extra flags for cutting and breakages.

You have proved to me that all three builders merchants have calculated wrong. What about the edging. Both sides edging is 10m long. what size edging will be adequate. My calc for 150mm is way out. Please help again.

you may find thats a bit low for cuts. Look at how the patio will be set out and work out where the cuts will be.
