Hi all

This may be obvious to some, but to a self admitted non DIY literate person like me, it's not.

I have bought a new kitchen from B&Q which is being installed in a few weeks. We are having all the work done by B&Q, including installation, tiling, lighting etc etc.

In my moneysaving mode, I am trying to minimise any unnecessary costs.
To start, I am going to remove the old kitchen myself, saving me around £300.
I am also going to do the painting myself which is the easiest part (I thought) considering I have recently painted all the house.

When removing something off the wall, I have noticed that the wall is peeling. I am just wondering, is this plaster coming off? Or is it some sort of wall coating that was previously applied? It's very patchy and coming off in the corners of walls and where things have been attached to the walls i.e pictures, cupboards etc.

Will this need re plastering, skimming or anything of the sort? I'm just not sure what to do, I can't just paint over it because it will look terrible and uneven.

Any help would be appreciated, I have attached photos.

Thanks once again

The lower picture looks like a combination of damp and paint that was not thinned when the first coat was applied.

How high up the wall is it? Is it an exterior wall, if not is there a bathroom behind it?

Assuming that it isn't damp- if the first coat of emulsion wasn't thinned, it tends to dry on the surface rather than soaking in to the plaster. The tell tail sign is when you try to roll over it, the roller will end up pulling the old paint off.

Try an area, roll the wall, wait a while and then whilst it is still wet, roll again and see what happens.
Then report back.
