in four core flex (brown, black, grey and earth) is the grey the neutral and black the emergency??

in a living room about 5m by 5m how many downlighters and wattage would u say is needed???????

With the introduction of the new colours, to get away from black=neutral, yes the grey should be sleaved blue and used for the neutral. I'm not sure what you mean when you say emergency?

I'll let someone else sort out your downlighters, downlighter lighting design is not my thing

Brown, black and grey are your 3 phase colours. You can use black OR grey for your neutral, as long as it is identified as such.

I would say for your living room that 5 small downlighters with 40W lamps would be fine. It really is just down to personal preference though.
