So you can't, or may not be able to, buy a fan off the shelf and put it on its own switch and have it work OK?

Without timer over run . Yes any fan will do.
With timer over run. Depends on the length of cable with Live and Switched Live runnning side by side whether the switched live into the timer module will have enough capacitively coupled energy to falsely indicate the switch as being ON

So why don't the fans have suppression components built in to get rid of false signals?
Cost and another component to fail.
