Hi guys, I've recently noticed these small black flies appearing over the past few days in my kitchen, by the sink and dishwasher area.

Yesterday my flat-mate had a shower and afterwards there was a pretty awful smell coming from the bathroom and kitchen.

I've checked the dishwasher and sinks etc but nothing appears to be out of order.

I assume it's something 'underneath'.

What do you guys suspect it could be and what do you suggest I do?

Thanks,

Alex

Lift the floor to see what may be going on?? That being said is it rented? If so, get the landlord to have it checked.

No, I am the landlord. I'm not convinced it's the floor. I seem to think the flies are coming from the taps???

Defo not from taps, are they fruit flies? Somethink manky in the waste attracting them?

No, I've been Googling around today and I think they're drain flies.

Check for drain flies by putting a strip of cellotape over the plughole. Leave it overnight then check in the morning for stuck beasties. A drain fly when crushed will leave a powder (a bit like a moth). Use a drain cleaner to get rid of them.

If it's fruit flies, it's likely you have a waste leak under the floorboards or water backing up from outside the house. Obviously you would need to investigate the leak but the best way to deal with these is to get a pest control company in who will block the vents and spray a chemical under the house.

Yeah it's drain flies, I've used plug hole unblocker stuff and been killing the flies with spray whenever they come. They're getting fewer but still coming.

Any other ideas?

Check to see if your neighbours have milk/newspapers piling up on the doorstep or a neighbour you haven't seen for s week or two.
