Generally it better to go in one direction only - forward. Because the sander rotates in one direction only, its better to let it try and travel in the direction it wants to go but to control it but holding it back. Pulling it back is just way to hard and would not be easy to control.
Depends on the kind of sander you have.
With a professional drum sander you are supposed to go forward and backwards (on a slow pace). Most of the drumsanders you can hire at the centres don't fall in that category (I remember we had to use one of those when our equipment had to be repaired. The minute we walked backwards, the handle/steel of the sander came loose with the drum itself 'walking' forward on its own
