Floorboards direct on to chipboard

Is it OK to lay floorboards direct onto a chipboard floor?

If yes, what is the best way of fixing them?
..and also... what type of wood would you recommend using?

I am thinking of using 6 inch wide plain boards (no tongue and groove).
