Hi,

Quick question from a novice. I've bought an ECU as there is water getting and the passanger foot weld is very damp, to cut a long story short i've been shown that the ECU was affected by this and have bought a new one. Is fitting an ECU just a case of unplugging the old one and replacing or is any programming involved?

Also its been mentioned that it still may not work if the wiring has shorted out, so any ideas if i should just take it to an auto electrician or see if fitting the ECU first may solve the problem?

many thanks.

if its the same ecu it shouldnt need programming, you will have to check how much corrosion there is around the terminals on the multiplug though before connecting it up,make sure everything is clean

you may well find that your keys will not start the car though. in older fords the keycode chip was in the key and read by the ecu, they had big problem with people being able to steal the cars really easily by putting their own ecu in the car they intended to steal and using their own keys that were recognised by the ecu they had fitted (all keys fit the ignition i think, just not unlock the doors) anyway the way ford got around this was to fit the keycode decoder to the fuel pump, so basically the pump would have to be changed in order to steal the car, but that is in newer fords...

Doubt you'll come across too many problems with something that old, should be plug and play!
