ford alarm

hi,
any help appreciated.my dad has a ford escort estate 97 reg.his remote for the alarm has started playing up,one of the button's doesn't feel right.he's been told he need's a new fob but it need's reprogramming and only ford can do it.is this true or can an independant auto electrician with programming equipment do it?

Ask at your local locksmith. My mate's a locksmith and he can do car keys with chips for peanuts compared to the dealers, so they might be able to program fobs too. Worth asking them.
