Ford Focus C Max - reversing lights intemittent

My C Max reversing lights come on intermittently.

I remember an old Mini I had which had a reverse switch on the gearbox.

I suspect this to be the problem but cannot see the gearbox (without taking off the tray under the engine) let alone any switches.

Can anyone help with its location or suggest any other possible remedies?
