Have a Fortic F10 tank heated with a Charnwood Solid fuel Stove.

There are times when my fire heats up too much and the water overheats.
The system is supposed to pump overheated water to outside overflow but there has been times when it spills over the tank and down thru ceilling! It also is hot enough to melt the tank insultation and distort the plastic lid.

Problem compounded as it is local authority housing, with one firm servicing the fire and council plumbers servicing the tank. Each blame the other, or me. I usually can turn down fire it gets too hot but can't guarantee I will be there all the time. Surely, the system must have fail safe to prevent hot water over spilling?

This has been going on for 2yrs now and have had many call outs from council plumbers but never is fixed. Anyone any ideas? :?

The problem with solid fuel is that it can never be fully controlled.

Have you a heat disipitation stat fitted on the system?
If not, fitting one would greatly improve the situation.

It sounds as if you have a plastic F&E tank.

That should not really be used with a solid fuel system as they cannot deal with excessive heat safely.

Reading what you have said, I do think that your lifestyle is inappropriate for a solid fuel system. Its not intended for people who go out!

The stove is a room heater type designed to burn long hours without tending. I love this system, for reasons:
- have no mains gas, electric heating is too expensive and inefficient.
-I am a nurse working long shifts and like that the stove is still alight when I return home after 14hrs.
- Also, neighbour has electric white meter heating same type tank at times he suffers same problem although water only goes thru overflow at 5am, not ceiling
-I can burn wood which is free for me
The bazing out of control only happens when I turn stove up to fully ignite new coal and forget to turn back down.

The tank in loft is copper with 2 half circle sections at top each with a plastic (now distorted) lid, in one circle is a ball cock

Plumber can to fix drip from overflow. he noticed that the ball cock was not specific to the tank. It was too long and had been bent to fit in. He suspects that could be part of the problem.
