A friend of mine is building an extension and the foundations will cross a public sewer line. The sewer pipe is about 2.3m deep and the foundations have been dug down to the invert level of the pipe.

Shuttering was used either side of the sewer pipe, approx 150mm either side, and then the concrete poured up to the required level. Then concrete lintels bridged over the pipe so blockwork can progress.

Now, he has contacted the water company and they are saying there should be 600mm either side of the sewer pipe, not the 150mm he has done.

Anyone hear about this regulation?

Cheers

Why did he not seek advice from the sewer company prior to the pour?

Is there an architect/designer involved?

Plans were drawn but the water plan supplied by the water company was way out, at least 2m. the groundworks guy did the foundations and said he does it this way all the time. even building control was happy.

No advice sought as the groundworks guy seemed to know what he was doing.

water company want a cross section plan to show the pipe was bridged correctly, but they say they need to see 600mm either side of the pipe. so back to my original question.....
