Fracking

What point are you making? Fracking is known to cause localised earthquakes, and has done in the UK Magnitude 1.5 recently, near Blackpool, also at Dogger Bank, where this drilling is done, and other sites globally. It's not new, it's not unknown, what's your point?

Lets hope the anti-frackers are pleased with themselves as gas prices go through the roof - if only we had a bit of self sufficiency!

the anti frackers miss an important point -the UK will be reliant on fossil fuel for many years yet, so it would be better to do it here in the UK with high safety and environmental controls than do it in say Russia where there arent.

We now rely so much on other countries for our energy needs we have placed ourselves in a very vulnerable position. How easy it is becoming for others to screw us over if we become belligerent towards them. Reduce/cut our power supplies, cut off a lot of our food sources, deny us access to communication etc. We truly are a poor relation to a lot of other countries these days. We may have won two of the biggest battles ever fought but we certainly aren't the overall winners.

Can you explain why in 2017 we decided to close our largest Gas storage facility and the Industry warned we would be at the mercy of market prices with only about 4 days storage.

In an interconnected world, countries focused on their comparative advantage, those with natural resources focused on extraction and production. Post 1980 and deregulation we became focused on services and finance. That is the path we took and this is where we are now. We have shown in our dealings that we will try renege on deals at the earliest convenience, that may go down well with the public but our trading partners will not be so accomodating.

Onshore UK is not a good place to do fracking. We don't have much of the right geology, we don't have anything near the huge water supplies we'd need.
France, as a simple comparison, could make a much better case. Much bigger reserves under less-populated areas and enough water to make more use of it.
Last time I looked, they'd rejected fracking.

There's a list of environmental concerns which are problematic. For each one on the list, the knowledge and regulations simply don't exist yet, on how to control it for safe operation. New problems start coming up whenever people try it.
We have been doing some fracking for years, under the N Sea.

Going by the OP dates, I can't believe it's a decade since we started discussing fracking ... time flies!

I wonder what our robust, rational, considered long term strategy is to wean ourselves off energy supplies that come from other countries?

Do we even have a strategy?

Wind power. Backed up by Hydrogen, a token Nuclear plant or three that appear to be fueled using refined money, and some Biomass plants.

We do still get something like a quarter of our Gas from the North Sea, but the idea we'd replace the rest of our Gas supply from Fracking is... questionable.

There is tech available were by you take a slash in some specialist bag and you can than plug yer mobile phone into it and charge it up

it just needs scaling up everyone has a slash bag in there house depending on how much power you require

pubs and clubs etc would be laughing with the tech the entire building could be powered by the punters taking a slash
