I found some orange stuff growing at the tidemark in my old mum's F&E, a thin layer floating on the top, and some leathery flakes sunk to the bottom.

In my own F&E I found translucent jelly last year

I scrubbed it out and bought some Fernox Biocide at about £25

Is there a cheaper way? Is it true that stuff doesn't grow in copper?

If you scoop it out then most inhibitors have a constituent to help to kill organic growth.

Keep it off your hands as some of it can cause itching or rashes.

Copper helps to supress organic growth.

I wonder if it would help to throw some scrap copper wire into the tank?

I use X100 but it didn't seem to stop the growth.

In theory it might help but in practice the copper seems to attract a coating of iron oxides and would need to be regularly changed!

Jelly in a header tank is usually caused by just tipping certain inhibitors in. Without draining to pull into the system.
