Hi my son’s kitchen has a fused switch with a 13A switch in his kitchen on the lighting circuit breaker.
Everything appears to work without this switch turned on including the outside light and the extractor which works off the socket ring main.
Any ideas what this set up could be used for?
I’d appreciate your input.

What MCB is this on?

If it's a 6A, I'd change that fuse replacing for a 5A or 3A, reseat the Grommet. Might be a Boiler? Water softener?

Also the insulation on the cables going into the Neon switch should enter the back box

presumably it also works when switched on, suggesting the fcu became redundant- accidentally or otherwise - and acts as part of the permanent circuit feed. Guessing the neutrals are tucked away in the background somewhere

Murdochat: yes the neutrals are connected. Just a bad angle for the photo. Thanks
Chivers67: yes it’s a 6A much. I agree it doesn’t make sense that the fuse is higher rated than the mcb. The insulation on the neon does enter the back box they have just been pushed up when moving the switch. Thanks

Perhaps someone has used an SwFCU as a "plain DP switch" for some kind of isolation switch for the circuit or part circuit thereof?
The equiv of putting a "redspot" fuse in the fuseholder.

When one has a lower rating in amps for the intended OPD than those downstream might be considered as the equiv of a straightforward conductor (taking into account the difference in fusing curves though) so it might have been used as a quick sort "bodge" using what is handy instead of the correct device to achieve the objective.
a sort of quick fix like feeding a cable from a house CU to a garage/granny flat CU with the main outgoing 30A fuse/MCB in the house to the supply side of an SWA to the garage/flat having three fuses of 30A, 20A, 5A or MCBs same value (or 32A, 20A, 6A) and discrimination not a big issue on the 30/32A side of things the the OPDs )especially if MCBs intended purely for use for switching on the some of the subcircuits.

A bit crackers but you do see things not totally unlike that in some places.
In fact I have seen things more totally bizzare yet still fusing down conductors to the required value somewhere along each circuit.

In a kitchen, tbe lighting circuit is often used to feed a cooker hood or extractor fan.

Yes it could be any number of things (including something that is already disconnected) so if leaving it off and seeing what happens or does not happen and you ensure all vital things still work might reveal someting - check the fuse is actually a working fuse and not blown
