Gap around cupboard in chimney breast

As part of the redecoration of the rear part of the living room in my Victorian terrace, I'm repainting the cupboard which a previous owner installed in the old chimney breast. The photo shows the gap between the frame and the wall. Is caulk the best way to fill this, or is there a better way? It's quite narrow in places (the photo shows the widest part).

Yes, some sort of caulk. I guess you’re going to paint it, so choose something paintable; I would also choose something reasonably flexible as that gap could expand and contract with temp/humidity changes. Caulks do vary in these respects. Some professional might come along in a minute and suggest the “perfect” product at £39.95 a tube; you can then try to find something that’s nearly as good for only a fiver.
