Hello

I'd like to wire up my Garage to the house, both of which are separate and about 20 metres apart.

I'm planning to use some armoured cable buried to a depth of 18 inches or more.

Connecting the cable to the house consumer unit would require a long and awkward cable run. Therefore is it still acceptable to connect the cable to a downstairs ring main socket as a 13 amp spur?

I also understand its a good idea to fit an RCD, but which end of the cable is the best position... either in the garage or in the house next to the spur socket?

Many thanks for your help,

Regards

Robin :D

If its a fairly new install then the downstairs sockets may alredy be RCD protected. The you can just spur off the ring with a 13a fused spur, If the sockets have no RCD protection then you can buy an RCD fused spur which fits onto a normal backing box and will protect the feed to the garage.

It's best for the RCD protection to be at the garage but as streetlighter has mentioned, your downstairs sockets may already be RCD protected. If they are not (they should be and you should get that seen to) then don't bother with the RCD spur and have the RCD protection at the garage.

On another note, are you sure 13A is going to be enough for all your needs in the garage? Are you sure the additional load will overload the socket circuit? What size cable are you intending to use? Are you aware that this work is notifiable?
