Garden Gate

It might be to prevent the gate swinging too far when the hinge plate is fixed to the back (not the side) of the gatepost.

Which is normal and prevents that gap

Hi Guys,

A little bit of angle-grinding and some bolts to attach - I'm all done

Thanks for all the help - really appreciated

Sorry to revive this, but I am doing a similar job and want to fit a tensioner.

I think somebody posted a sort of steel corner shoe you can put on the bottom corner of the gate, rather than relying on pulling against a bolt. I thought it was this thread, but can't find it.

Does anyone know the thing I need?

TIA

There are lots of kits you can buy that include the corner braces but not sure if they're available separately. There are standard corner braces you can buy but without the kind of raised hole you need to attach a cable hook to, guess they could be adapted?

If I can't find a purpose-made thing, I'll try a pyramid brace. To take the force off the screws.

But would prefer a big solid galvanised thing.

The kits seem to be more common in US.

I'd prefer bigger. There will be a lot of force, permanently.

Look up 'bed corner braces' or similar (the sleeping type), not sure you'll find a galvanised one though. A lot of these things don't seem very heavy duty though.

The nearest I can find is a pyramid brace, slipped over the bottom corner of the gate

Yes, that might do it though the fins that take the load are relatively small, and not welded to a point.

I don't see that the pyramid needs cutting to fit on a corner.

As you seem to be averse to screw-secured fittings. You could fix a large coach bolt (or a timber screw) diagonally across and through the wooden corner joint and secure your tensioner to that

Yes, I considered a large bolt, and still expect to use one, but it will pass through a steel shoe tight against the side and bottom of the gate, which will prevent the bolt pressing and indenting through the wood.

The other end of the tightening brace will be secured to the coach bolt in the top hinge.
