I'm sorry if this post sounds makes me sound like an ignoramus but I am a girl so bear with me! I live in France and have a gas CH system, currently the only thermostat being on the boiler itself. I think the reason was that the house was previously heated with wood fires and the CH just used as background heating. At present I have to go down to the cellar and alter the temperature on the boiler. There is an ordinary timer connected to the power socket. The boiler only controls the central heating, the hot water is separate. I would like to put a wireless room thermostat in the main room and have it simply turn the boiler on and off when necessary, but it seems that all the thermostats have a timer built in. Has anyone any advice or recommendations on the type of thermostat I need. I can't really afford a plumber/electrician - they are soooo expensive here in France. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much for your helpful reply - I have found a similar item to the one you suggest on French Ebay (hope this link works)

but I can't see how it works as there is no socket showing so I can't see where the boiler would plug into it, nor if it then plugs into the mains. Can you tell? All help is very very much appreciated. I will wait to see if you (or Agile?) can help but if not I will contact the Ebay vendor. Also I don't understand when it says the thermostat requires a two wire connection to the receiver. Many thanks again!

if you don't understand how to wire a thermostat, you are really going to have to employ someone who does.

fitting a thermostat is a fairly trivial job.

In the UK, a programmable thermostat such as the Honeywell CM907 is a very good choice. No doubt you can get something similar in France.

Having a timer on the power supply to the boiler is not a good option.

Thank you John D - I have a timer on the power supply because there is nowhere else to put it and I can't have the boiler running 24/24. I don't know why it is not a good option. But as I said I am a dunce concerning electrics, which is why I hoped to find a "plug and play" type wireless thermostat. Thanks for your help anyway
