Gas Fire Requirments.

Hi all, have an old gas fire fitted into an old fireplace which has no fire back at all just a large rectangular void which is ok for the type of fire I have. My question is I wish to get fitted a modern inset fire with no glass in front (open flames), can this be done with out a fire back in place?

Theoretically it can, but it's impossible to be certain without more information, such as what size and type of flue/chimney you have
