Hi, I have recently started excavating footings for my 2 storey extension to the side of my house having had all the necessary planning/ building control approval.

Problem is we have uncovered a 4 inch gas main approx 1 foot to the OUTSIDE of the extension.
I am informed by a friend who works for Transco that it is a low pressure gas main.

I cannot find reg.s on whether we should be allowed to continue build with the gas main only a foot away from the footings.

Where the pipe is, about half way up teh trench so will not be encased in any concrete etc.

Can someone give me some advice on where I stand with it?

you need to contact National Grid as they now are (or Scotia Gas if they own the pipes in your area). All the utilities companies have a department that deals with people doing building works and digging up the roads, as they like to avoid damage. They should be quite helpful, though they will be very fierce if you do not follow their advice.

They will sometimes reroute pipes to avoid problems. I don't think they charge unless you are building an industrial estate or something like that.

Start by having a look at
