The gas board are renewing pipes in my street. Yesterday a chap turned up to 'turn my gas back on'. I said that it wasn't off! Turns out that an engineer was due to turn me off at the meter in the morning but didn't return when there was no answer (I was at work in the morning). The gas had been disconnected during the morning (in the street) then re-connected when nobody was in. Hope this hasn't hurt my boiler - it seems fine. The bloke in charge came to apologise and I imagine that someone will get a stern word. Could be dangerous too, I bet.

Unlikely to be any problem with modern appliances. It is unusual though, as all affected properties should have been visited and checked. Did they not leave a card?

They disconnected us a week ago and then came to re-connect and check the pressure etc. We were at the place in the mains run where they had joined the old and new pipes and the foreman did tell us that we might need to be disconnected again, about a week later, as they moved down the road. But no card and no warning this time.

A polite word with the foreman would be my advice. Make your self available for the fitters to gain access is also a reasonable request. If there were any safety concerns they would have left you disconnected until entry could be gained to do the checks.
