Hopefully the right place for this question - we've just bought a new barbeque to replace the old one (probably 25-30 years old!) but has come with a different regulator to the previous one. I've got an almost full 15kg bottle of gas left so just after advice if it would possibly be any issues taking off the new one and replacing with the old otherwise it's buying a completely new bottle at a hundred and whatever quid. The old regulator although performing well before is getting old now so should I just bite the bullet and get a new bottle?

On the old hose it reads 'BS 3212: 1991/2/8/3 High Pressure LPG 05/100' and on the new hose 'GUANGFENG GF516 6mm EN16436-1-class 2-8mm-10 bar'

OK, ta - that's the one I've used for the past 25-30 years, maybe time for a new one then!

Thanks for the quick answer.

As far as I am aware the only difference is that propane ignites more easily in lower temperatures. You can use butane, your blue bottle, with the appropriate regulator, without any issues.
I think the main difference is that Propane boils at a much lower temperature, making it more suitable for outside use.

£100 for a bottle ? Refills are £30-40 and you can get a bottle for a few £ from Facebook marketplace or even free , I recently picked up three bottles for free and all had gas in them.
Be aware some brands of gas use a different size connection .

Just quoting £104 for a new set-up for a 13kg bottle at the nearby B&Q, as you say, I'll be looking on Facebook and the like.

Your local re-cycling centre will be able to provide you with any bottle you want for a small "donation" to their common good fund.

We ran our barbie on a site supplied propane bottle for many years, we just stuck a normal screw in regulator on in lieu of the supplied clip on one.

That bottle lasted over 30years (not big barbie fans). When empty I didn't feel able to replace as downsizing but I did find it hard to find somewhere to get rid: our tips defo WON'T take them. Local builder's merchant did in the end but Freecycle the other option.

Swap the regulator over. Blue works fine unless the temperature is down around 5-10 C or so ... summer caravanners exist happily with Butane except in an unexpected cold snap.

Almost all BBQs are happy to run on either Butane or Propane gas.

I refuse to pay the extortionate amount for 'BBQ' gas in the special BBQ bottles. I use the red Propane gas in 13kg form instead. Just replaced my must be over 20 year old regulator with a handwheel version to save using that left handed wrench I can never find when needed ;)

I run my BBQ and pizza oven on a big one:

For my caravan I pour it into little ones. The squeamish should probably look away now:
