'Gas' smell from under the floor

For the past 4 days there's been a smell coming up through the little cupboard next to our front door (inside the house) where the gas meter used to be. The meter was moved outside years ago but there are still pipe holes in the cupboard floor and the smell seems to come up through the holes with the draught. I was convinced the smell was gas as the gas pipes will still run underneath the cupboard but I called the gas emergency line and they couldn't find any trace. The smell is weak, if we leave the hall door open then you can't smell it at all. It's only if the hall door is closed that it traps the smell in the vestibule area. We can't smell it in the hall or the other side of the cupboard which is the living room. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm still worried that it might be the internal gas piping although the gas man put the detector down the hole and didn't find any reading. What else could smell like gas that comes from underneath the floor?

The only way to stop you worrying is to lift the floorboards up, as mentioned most likely, dead mouse/rats etc or could be an old redundant gas pipe
