I have an old central heating system, boiler and pump installed 1997, a cast iron Potterton Kingfisher still going strong ! I plan to change the two pumps next spring - Grundfos Ups 15 50 Does CH and a DAB which just does the HW. Since then, CH pumps have gone "Smart" . The question is should I just go for the old fashioned 3 speed pumps or try the new super duper automatic electronic control pumps ?

We fit the dab evosta 3 all the electronic whistles and bells but also has a excellent 3 speed constant curve mode.
So it will if necessary will behave same as a old 3 speed pump.
Much better price than Grundfos (and more reliable) even though dab is totally owned by Grundfos!

The Dab Evosta 2 is also very popular around here, unfortunately it doesn't display the flowrate and pump head. I have a 6M Wilo Yonos Pico and a few friends installed them on their solid fuel systems as you can almost infinitely (in 0.1M steps) vary the head in both CP (constant pressure) and PP (proportional head) modes, they run them in CP mode and can then match the circulation rate to match the "fires" output which prevents the pipe stat constantly cutting in/out and gives a nice steady rad output. Both the Evosta 2&3 have 6 PP curves which would probably do the job almost just as well, all interesting stuff.

My mate fits the evosta but I like the Pico

Either will use about 20% the power of your old pump for the same flow rate.

Just be aware modern pumps don’t like dirty systems though
