I have a georgian door which has rotted beyond repair, therefore I will be replacing with a timber unit. The current door is single, however Im thinking of putting in a set of french doors in the same style. Should it be replaced with a single in keeping in with originality?

Are you saying you're thinking of putting in a pair of doors in the same opening or is there going to be some widening involved?
Should it be kept original depends on local bye laws if it's a front door as you may need permission. Would it look right is probably another question and is this your main door that will be used all the time, french type doors may prove to be more inconvient.
Maybe a picture may help.
