At the school i went to though, it was the bus companies not the head who made the call on closing in bad weather

You are wrong there . The buses stopped running the week before last, the head kept the school open and taught those that turned up. That is my point, some heads just give up too easily.

When i was a lad the snowflakes were as big as a house.
