After replacing the leaking valve with a new Sharkbite one, I disassembled the old one. (I probably could have unscrewed it in situ, but was afraid of kinking or breaking the pipes.) Turns out it was leaking because the O-ring seal was completely disintegrated.
So I cleaned it up and installed a new O-ring and washer (which was also petrified and ready to fall apart)
I cleaned everything up and assembled the valve insert ready to replace in one of the other old under-sink valves, should it become necessary in the future.
