My aged mother in law has a back boiler and fire which is causing us some concern.

The only markings visible are " Glow Warm Majorca 240/6" on the fire which is the freestanding type with four heating bars and controls on the side near the top.

The two inner elements are used for the 'low' setting, all four lighting for the "high". For some time the low setting elements, whilst working, do not appear to be lit.

This has lead to her 'adjusting ' the controls on occasion and we are worried she may inadvertently leave the fire opperating before she retires for the evening, (she lives alone). The fire has been checked by a gas engineer who regularly services it. He confirms it is ok but is unable to get spares.

Can any advise on the correct name/make of the fire if not as above (Baxi?) and possible source of spares?

If spares are unavailable, could the fire be replaced or will a new installation be required, and if so, will a new back-boiler suffice or will a condenser be the only option?

Hi..sounds like it could just need the fire gas tap cleaning and regreasing or the gas injector which feeds the inner part of the burner needs cleaning out properly (not just blowing it )
Sometimes the inner radiants will not be as bright as the outer ones because over time they become worn because they get used most.
Try swapping them around to see if it helps.

boiler name sounds correct
no you can't get a new fire for it
under certain circumstances a back boiler may be fitted but you would be probably be looking at a condensing boiler.

Hope that helps a little

Thanks Scatmanjohn,

Have tried the swop but little difference, could try the clean you suggest but would prefer new fire.

This will be a problem as there is only gas to the current set-up, any disruption to house would have to be a very last resort.

Hello again.. Its almost certainly the injector that needs cleaning but you need a corgi engineer to do it as it is a gas carrying part.

Thanks Scatmanjohn,

Sorry for delay in replying.
The gas fitter did attend about a year ago and cleaned the injector and burners. That did improve things, but only for a few weeks, so looks like replacement parts are the only real answer.
