the model is a compact 100e
i have just noticed that there are 2 orange wires coming from the front panel, they seem to have some type of red sensor on them and a spring clip that indicates that it was attatched to something but it is hanging free at the moment

sounds like the c/h thermistor 
it clips on the pipe under the gas valve near the overheat stat
you will have to drop the front panel
