Hello everyone,
Would be grateful for some help before I try and find a heating engineer on a bank holiday. Watford if anyone's at loose ends!

Heating was working fine but suddenly went cold. Went to the boiler - kind of whirring noise but not fired up. Switch on and off. Same again. Downloaded the manual and followed the trouble shooter.
Neon 1 and 2 on. 3 and 4 off.
Checking for 3, no 230v between n/o and N. The other two connectors ok. So troubleshooter says replace air pressure switch part no 202201.

Does this sound right? What does an air pressure switch do? It also asked "does fan hunt?" - no idea what that means.

If this is right does anyone know where to get this part on a bank holiday Monday? - I am in Watford but happy to drive a reasonable distance. Or if anyone knows anyone who can fixit tomorrow that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Joe

If the whirring is steady your fan is likely to be OK. Other than that you need an rgi - unless he has the switch in stock I'd be surprised if you'd find one before Tuesday.

Yes whirring is steady. What's a "rgi"? Is there somewhere I can pick one up on Tuesday so it only needs one visit?

registered gas installer.

I can check when I'm out of the bbath, but really, a diagnostic visit is in order just in case it is something daft like the boiler needs a thorough service.

A lot of installers are uneasy fitting supplied parts too.

there's a good chance the aps won't cure the fault. I would get a decent rgi in who repairs boilers. not a box hanger. could be a very simple fault

Thats why I keep these kind of parts in stock so I can fix boilers at weekends and holidays!

But a DIYer should not be changing these kind of parts anyway. It should only touched by an RGI.

Agile - I agree. Trouble is finding one on a bank holiday! I eventually have and I'll bet when he turns up, hopefully he turns up now that I have paid BG's ransom, he won't have the part. He will order it tomorrow for fitting day after. In the mean time we and the kid freeze! Of course I understand many boilers etc etc.

Sometimes there is very little alternative. At least this one only seems to require two screws and 3 connectors.

Shame you aren't in Watford or I'd have begged you to come and fix it!

Mickyg - I used the manual and it's fault finder using a multi meter. It says air pressure. Of course I'd use a rge but on a bank holiday they seem to be rarer than sunshine!

I am very happy to go to Watford, its only 12-15 min by car. Or I can take the 142 bus or the tube.

Took far longer to get to Cambden Town by tube.

Doing repairs at a fixed fee means that I need to be able to fix everything in a single visit if at all possible. Thats helped by keeping a good range of spare parts.

Agile - If only I had known that this morning. I eventually phoned up British Gas and signed up for their fix and annual cover as they could send someone round today. Of course he turned up but didn't have the part - so back wednesday. But he did get it going.

Mickyg - you were right. It wasn't air pressure. But the fan and took him two mind to diagnose it.

Thanks to everyone for help and ideas.

I expect the fan was just dirty.

I would have washed that and not used any parts in that case.

What did BG do to get it going?
