I have one of these in a chimney Brest it originaly had a grill covering it, should I put it back or is better to have it with no cover it looks a bit unsightly! but is there a chance of the boiler getting too hot with it fitted?
The heat is not really the issue. This boiler needs a flow of air for its combustion process, hence the openings in the boiler casing. I believe that this is not a room sealed, balanced flue boiler and if so, it should not be enclosed. There should also be an air brick or vent into the room from outside in which it is located to provide the aforesaid air supply for it.
My qualifications are electrical so I am only involved with the wiring of boilers and not the gas side, however you get to learn things as you go along, and I believe that even the mesh grill in your photo may be too restrictive to the airflow as it is. Hopefully one of the Gas Safe guys may be along soon to confirm or advise you otherwise.
no you can not use that grill and that is not a back boiler as you suggest, you were told this by many in August when you first asked it, you will not get a different answer by constantly asking the question, that mesh is not suitable and should not be fitted, you are risking your own and anyone else in the houses safety by messing with the ventillation
Sorry for going on about it, the wife's doing my head about it, she says "well it's been there for 20 years when we moved in" I explained that things have changed in the last 20 years! She keeps going on about not wanting to see the boiler, can any other screen be placed in front of the boiler with perhaps larger holes.
There aren't too many of those boilers still around. It will be at least 40 years old, so when you replace it with a new more efficient one you can relocate it somewhere out of sight and out of mind (also out of earshot )
