Hi All,

Just a simple question...

Almost everytime we turn the water off at the mains (to have some plumbing work done) and then turn the mains back on when all is completed, a glugging, banging noise suddenly appears to travel all the way through the pipes each time the water taps are turned off after use in the bathroom/kitchen.

Why does this happen and what needs to be done to stop all the racket? I'm assuming it's something simple such as turning off the mains with the taps running or something like that, but don't have a clue.

Thanks.

Probably your pipes need clipping properly or lagging in places.

Can't see this is urgent unless you are turning your water off every day.

Hi Bahco.

Why does it only occur when the water is turned on after being turned off?

No, it's not urgent, but it causes loud clanging noises which our neighbour mentioned hearing as well; don't want to disturb the neighbours as well! We don't turn the water off unless there is work that needs to be done, but once it is turned back on, the noises start and do not go away for a LONG time or even until the next time someone turns the water off and on again. I tried turning it off and on again but no luck; maybe I'll try it a few more times and hope to get lucky with one of them.

In the meantime, if there are any other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Could also be a loose (worn) jumper in the main stopcock, or even that it has been installed the wrong way round?

Can you turn the water off in the street, or at the meter?

No, there's no tank; it's a combination boiler which heats the water when the hot water tap is turned on.

Hi MM. "Can you turn the water off in the street, or at the meter?" I don't think so.

I don't know what a jumper or stopcock is, I'm afraid, hahah.

Thanks.
