I have an ageing iMac, which Apple (Bless Them )no longer supports and won't/can't upgrade the operating system. The iMac/Gmail is now failing to send email and reports 'Mail was unable to log in to the SMTP server"smtp.gmail.co" using password authentication'.I am able to receive emails but cant send them. I have the password and it has been the same for years. Suddenly it stops working. I have Gmail on my phone and it works Perfectly well there, so just why my iMac suddenly decides it doesn't like it is a mystery to me. The 'connection doctor' is no help what so ever, all it tells me that mail was unable to connect to the internet.
I am a PC Numpty and all I see is 'Gobble de Gook' when trying to fix it. Has any one got any very simple advice on what I can do to fix it.

You need to check outgoing password is correct or may be missing. Incoming and outgoing server settings need to match .

That should be smtp.google.com , not .co

You should be using ports 465 (for SSL) or 587 (for TLS).

The Password is correct. everything was working a few days ago, nothing changed by me, just stopped sending mails. Gmail on my phone is working OK using the same servers. Thanks for your Reply.

Typographical error on my message it is smtp.google.com. I'll check the ports, but I have never changed anything so as it worked a couple of days ago, I expect the ports to be the same. It's all wizardry to me.
Checked SSL port it was 993, tried 465, no difference, so returned it to 993.

Try logging in at gmail.com and see if that works OK.
That will confirm that it's you and not gmail.

Also it should be smtp.gmail.com (not google).

smtp.gmail.com

Requires SSL: Yes

Requires TLS: Yes (if available)

Requires authentication: Yes

Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

See the below webpage for more info.

Switch it off and restart?
That seems to have done the trick.
If I had a brain, I would have tried the Fix it All technique, but sadly the brain I once had is now a shrivelled Walnut as clearly I have demonstrated.
Thanks Murdochat for lending me yours. I must try Harder.

Always ask AI, now, it's very good for suggesting what to do and taking you through it.
ChatGPT is best for Apple stuff, and Gemini is best for Google - try them both.

Whenever I have trouble with my iPhone or iPad, the first thing I do nowdays is switch them off and then back on again. Fixed almost 100% of faults.
