Hi All,

I would appreciate some advice on whether there is any situation where a goal-post frame can be fixed to an existing strip foundation.

This particular situation is an existing mass concrete strip foundation 600w x 600d, with an axial factored load from each column c90kN. No formal SI, but the ground is deemed to be medium dense sand and gravel with a presumed safe bearing capacity c200kn/m2.

My concerns are:
  • bending/shear of existing foundation
  • differential long-term settlement
My thanks in advance

There is every situation when it can.

Your concerns don't occur

Thanks for your response.

I would have thought bending would occur and reinforcement would be required in most cases. Effectively the strip would be acting like a combined footing

Perhaps in bridges or suchlike, but not the back of the house under the new patio doors
