They should just put it back exactly as it was. Admit it was a political booboo. Any attempt to means test it will leave lots of people still peed off and probably end up costing more.

Those who don’t want it or need it can refuse to accept it ?

The part that irks people the most is that they had been planning to do this for months. knowing they would never win if they announced before - they kept it quiet.

That is true. Part of it is that they wanted to show they could be trusted with the public finances and were prepared to take tough decisions. It was a stupid policy in the first place. But taking it away has been shown to be toxic. They will probably end up with a fudge that is the worst of all worlds.

He seems to have something for everyone.

He can promise the earth. But there's no way he can deliver.

You can't cut taxes to the bone AND at the same time offer all the benefits under the sun.
