Opinions? Are they a good idea? Do they need much maintenance?

Issue: I am hoping to buy a bungalow. The plan would be to extend downstairs and also, do a loft conversion. Loft would have a master bedroom facing rear, with ideally a Juliette door.

But, if I do this, it would restrict what I can do with the extension (unless the whole house, roof included, extends out) so a flat roof might the the solution.

But, a flat roof rarely looks pretty, and if there's a Juliette door with view to garden, it would spoil it.

So, maybe a living / green roof.....

But, flat roofs have a bad enough reputation as it is with membrane decay and leaks, so piling on earth that retains water, with plants taking root, seems a bit bonkers. But, it might be a great solution ....

Thoughts?
