What is the best way to achieve a grey wood finish? Should I use a grey veneer or can I stain certain woods to give a grey finish? I am making a small table for my son, in the shape of an electric guitar. The top will be plywood and will be sprayed to match his guitar which has black edges fading into a grey wood grain in the middle. I’m not bothered about matching the wood to the guitar, just want to get a similar look.

The finished look will depend upon the timber you use for your table. As you say ply then maybe birch faced would be a bland enough start unless of course you want some sort of grain in which case ash or maybe oak veneered might be a better choice?

There's water based dies available such as here-http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/products/wood-finishes/wood-stains/concentrated-wood-dye.htm or here- http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/products/wood-finishes/wood-stains/water-based-stain.htm

Ok these are water based blacks but can be diluted. Colron also do a spirit based black stain which again can be diluted with turps to produce a grey
