grit in sink

hi all,just ran mixer tap in friends house and when water had drained away it left what looked like a shovel full of sand in sink!tap has not been used much for 4 or 5 weeks prior 2 me using it,could this be a problem with water softener?will it clear with regular use or get worse?any ideas

if a softener is fitted, the stuff in the sink looks like sand its probably the resin beads from the softener.
seen this happen a few times in big installations, but i never got involved with the repairs (subcontracted)
Can you bypass the softener?
You will have to flush through all your taps/showers and maybe heating.
