Hi,

We are building a small single-storey front extension and looking to self-build and project manage most of the work.

We are having to have a piled/ground beam foundation for the extension due to clay soil and the proximity of a number of mature conifers.

We've had the ground beam and piling design drawn up by an engineer and approved by building control, but the one open question I have, is that is there a minimum finished depth that the ground beam needs to be below ground level?

The current plan is for the top of the ground beam to be 150mm below the finished ground level with two courses of engineering bricks to start of the walls before transitioning to block work and the facing bricks for the inner outer skins of the cavity walls.

The floor will be a reinforced concrete slab on top of 150mm of Cellcore HX S to allow for any ground heave.

We are trying to keep the amount of spoil we need to remove to a minimum as we unfortunately can't use a grab truck and all the spoil has to be removed by skip.

Any guidance or advice appreciated.

TIA.
