I have an Escort N Reg (cvh) and after coming home from work today I noticed a "hairy mass" dangling from the exhaust pipe. I pulled it out and it is about 30 cm in length and fairly thick, and brown in colour. I have no idea what it is and whether I should be worried about it?

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hmmm, a mystery indeed

It sounds more like someone has stuffed something up your exhaust as I can't think of anything that would come out of it that looked like that

Oh, do you happen to recall seeing a horse behind you last time you reversed, that suddenly disappeared?

Well I was driving throung the country!!

Do exhaust pipes have a lining at all that could be falling out.

I drove to work today and my car didn't blow up so I susspose thats ok!!

Hi again,

No, there would not be any lining in the exhaust that could resemble what you talk about.

I still have a feeling that someone has put something up the exhaust. I suspect that it has cleared, or you would have problems with the starting or running of the car.

Alternatively, you might have reversed into a grass bank, just enough for the exhaust to 'dig up' some of the bank without you realising - This happened to me once

Thanks for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't be surprised if a dead cat was up there with my driving!!

Thanks again :D

Silencers are sometimes partially filled with glass fibre, I should be prepared to fit a new silencer very soon.

I agree.........Saw this only last week on a Mondeo which was trailing about 5 yards of tangled glass fibre from the tail-pipe!!! As the guy told me later, he had the back-box replaced and the exhaust centre confirmed the fibre-glass theory!!!

Hope this helps.

my friend is a mchanic and recently his wig fell off and landed in someones engine - this could have somehow worked its way through to the exhaust?? another thing to consider!!

Its the Baffling material . had the same on a Rover I once owned .
