Hi there,

Have just purchased my first home and already having boiler problems! Appears that the system was left off for anything up to 9 months. System is a Halstead Finest and the unit was going straight to lock out when it was turned on. Engineer was called out and the fault was linked to a microswitch, everything was going well for a couple of days........................................................turned off the unit after 2 days of constant use, fired it back up a day after and everything worked smoothly until suddenly the system attempted to ignite when running the hot water tap. Now it attempts to fire up three times unsuccesfully and ignition locks out. Is there a simple solution as really do not have the money to throw at it!?

I seem to remember answering this question recently. There is a fairly small number of operations which have to work correctly for a typical combi, like yours, to function. Things stick, leak, get water in, get covered in dirt/fluff/spiders webs, things get damp, oil dries out, rubbers perish and so on and so on.
Some of these would be quite likely on a middle aged boiler which has been left for a while, and could be checked in the course of a thorough service. However, a service is not a complete breakdown of the boiler and replacement of every part which is capable of deterioration.

And you haven't actually had it serviced, you had it repaired.

We charge £55 for a routine service in London but dont do it for at least a week! This price only applies if the boiler appears to be working correctly!

This is to differentiate a service from a repair which we go to the same day when possible and charge a little more!

Excellent, that is not too bad!!

Checked recently and a foul smell is coming from under the stairs where the boiler is housed, interesting!

Think a service could be the best option.
