We've been getting hammering in the main water feed to the storage tank in the loft. It happens when the tank refills afer a lot of water has been run, usually for a bath.
I checked the tank and found the valve was very corroded, so I replaced the valve and float. This didn't stop the hammering, but now I can see the problem. When the water falls into the tank from the valve, it causes ripples across the surface that bounce the float up and down, and that causes the hammering.
I've read here about the anti-hammer devices, and I actually bought one when I got the new float valve, but I haven't fitted it yet for two reasons.
1. From the instructions, it seems to be meant for individual appliances like washing machines. I'm concerned that it might not be suitable to fit on a rising water main, and we do have very high water pressure here.
2. If the problem is due to the float bouncing up and down, surely the best solution is to stop it bouncing rather than try to cancel out the effects that it causes?
I thought of fixing a pipe to the valve outlet to take the water down below the surface, but there is no way to fix it to the valve.
Any suggestions please?
