I am tiling onto a exterior solid wall made from brick and blocks - In the past I would have SBR primed the surface and then tiled but now the rage is hardie board and using flexible adhesive

I am worried that after applying hardie board and 10mm adhesive and 10mm porcelain tiles we have a 30mm space taken up by wall decoration - This is especially probleatic when you have a half tiled and half painted utility room where it sticks out quite a lot

What can forum members advise - Is tiling onto solid exterior walls which have been primed with neat SBR really a problem? Can I put a skim coat of 3mm of plaster instead?

I am not worried about cost just the finish as this is my forever house

The tiles I will use are 1200 mm by 600 porcelain tiles which I know are sensitive to movement !

I put a thin coat of sand/cement render on my external walls, prime with SBR then tile. If your wall is solid, add some waterproofer to the render. If you get the render flat you won't need a 10mm adhesive bed.

If its a real solid wall (ie no cavity, no insulation) you might want to stick some Marmox on. As others, if you get the boards flat you won't need 10mm of adhesive
